About The Therapy

Happy Brain believes in a unique approach for each child or adult, couple and family. Every individual has a history, a body, an environment and an outlook on life that is exclusive and cannot be defined entirely by diagnosis or labels. We believe the past effects the present but control of the present is decided by each individual and we possess the ultimate power to positively change our life. Our therapists use a variety of approaches that are highly researched and proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Our therapies are safe and effective for treatment of addiction, emotional stress, depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD and other issues. We enjoy work with diverse populations and offer Spanish and English therapists.

Sensorimotor Trauma and Attachment Therapy and Techniques:, The body is adversely affected when bad things happen to us as children, adolescents or adults. Unfortunately, the way our body stores trauma can work against our mental health and daily stress can keep old traumatic events alive. We work with sensorimotor processes to promote healing using brain science techniques from Babette Rothschild, Pat Ogden, Dan Siegel, Bruce Perry and the Body-Mind Institute, and others. We are all trained to use a technique to reduce stress stored in the body called Integration Based Stress Removal (IBSR). It is effective for use with children and adults and can be used alone or with conventional psychotherapy or play therapy, which we recommend. This technique is a one-time intervention for stress management that takes between one to two hours on average.

Emotion focused therapy, developed by Les Greenberg, Ph.D., is highly researched and has proven particularly effective in working with depression, anxiety and relationship issues. Positive change is created by understanding the layers of emotions, the meaning created from the emotion, and using positive emotions to alter or replace negative emotions. Understanding our emotions is a difficult process and takes time, patience and honesty. Clarifying false beliefs, removing negative thoughts and/or unnecessary rules allows us to verbally express sadness, embarrassment or fear without pesky secondary emotions, such as anger, rage, irritability or frustration surfacing. This is a powerful benefit to our overall happiness.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), from Aaron Beck, is used to gain a new personal knowledge of the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. Sometime negative thoughts and maladaptive beliefs about us, others and past events can create feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious or depressed. Learning a new interpretation of our environment and our person can create control over our thinking, improve overall wellbeing and encourage healthy relationships.

Narrative Therapy, developed by David White, Ph.D. Each person has created a story to the events in his or her life that is self-defining. The stories may cast blame or shame on him, her, another or others. The key to success in this model is through definition of the problem or problems, creating a solution to address the problem or problems, and making new meaning of what happened that allows for a positive present and future. This therapy allows us to close the book on painful past events so that we can live peacefully in the present.

Play and Art Therapy has been used since the days of Sigmund Freud (e.g. Melanie Klein). Its value is still unprecedented in working with children and some adolescents and adults. Play therapy reduces anxiety and allows the brain to cognitively reflect past events that effect present actions. At Happy Brain, an entire room is dedicated to children and adolescents and we offer a variety of tools and techniques to enhance the therapeutic experience and to make the experience both fun and positive.

Hypnotherapy has been around since the 1840s and some versions of the technique goes back to ancient Egypt and Asia. This technique promotes mind-body healing. It is guided focused attention to promote relation, to encourage positive perceptions, and to assist with specific struggles, such as smoking, addictions, weight reduction, anxiety and stress management, phobias, athletic enhancement, past life regression, and more. At Happy Brain, this approach has been extremely effective when looking to completely remove a habit or pattern, such as smoking cessation, soda consumption, and the like.
